Four Centuries of Nudes in Sarasota’s Ringling

Language of the Nude, Four Centuries of Drawing the Human Body

Ringling Museum of Art

Sarasota, FL

May 3-July 26, 2009

Works from the Crocker Art Museum illustrate the nude’s place in the artistic process and its role in physically linking ideas of the real and ideal in European art.

Ringling Sarasota Nude Art

For centuries, the nude body was the highest expression of human aspiration. Religious figures, gods and goddesses, heroes and even personifications of abstract ideals were made visible in the undraped human figure.

The Language of the Nude: Four Centuries of Drawing the Human Body, an exhibition of nearly 60 rarely seen drawings from the Crocker Art Museum, examines the nude, its place in the artist’s process, and the ideals and desires it expressed in European art.  Divided into four sections, the show traces the development of life drawing and its uses in Italy, the Netherlands, France and Germany from the 16th through the 19th centuries.

Likewise, it explores the language of line, pose and gesture that the nude embodies in narrative, ranging from the Crucifixion to the Judgment of Paris to episodes from national epics. Featuring beautiful works by well- and little-known artists, this exhibition includes a mid-16th-century male nude after Michelangelo’s Last Judgment, Jacques-Louis David’s Funeral of a Hero and Albrecht Dürer’s Female Nude with a Staff.

Britney Too Much for Obama’s Eyes

Jamie Boling‘s 6’x10′ Snake Charmer painting, depicting a special moment in Britney Spears’ eventful life, had just arrived with the artist from Virginia, where not long ago, you’ll remember, Barack Obama stopped by a gallery where it was hanging and handlers had it covered up for fear the politician might be photographed in front of it. The curators of the “Just Britney” show suffer from no such phobia. “I can understand why a politician wouldn’t want to be photographed in front of Britney Spears’ crotch,” says Boling, “but I wish that Obama would have been more fearful of censorship than the possible fallout of an unfortunate photograph. He could have used the whole thing as an opportunity to defend free speech instead of making a move to cover and remove the painting.” Watch the clip and see Boling re-stretch Britney’s vagina.

The “Just Britney” group show of paintings, drawings, and sculpture by 47 artists inspired by Britney Spears opens Friday, September 28, with an open-bar party at WOW’s storefront gallery, from 8PM to midnight. Sponsored by Svedka Vodka.
